Sights of Summer!

Well I think it is finally here!  Shhhhh...though, we don't want to scare it away too soon.  I have been enjoying our yard these cool summer days, and have a garden, ( though, we didn't get everything planted that i wanted too) that is doing really well.  Lots of hanging baskets, many of which I planted and nurtured myself.  And tons and tons of daylillies.  I really started growing daylillies when we were stationed in North Carolina.  My darling husband dug hundreds of them up and moved them here to Washington when we came home.  Enjoy some of my favorites.  And have a wonderful wonderful day!

Soda and Soft Drinks

JUST AN INTERESTING TIDBIT I CAME ACROSS TODAY....I thought it was cool, enjoy....

What is soft about a soft drink? What does soda have to do with sodium?

July 7, 2010 20 Comments Share Some call it soda. Others say soft drink, fizzy drink, soda pop, or just plain-old pop. There is no right word for the sweet carbonated beverage, although it would be wrong not to know the linguistic background behind the bubbles. A much-discussed soda ban in Los Angeles schools has increased our thirst. For knowledge, that is.

The “soft” in soft drinks is an adjective used in relation to a hard drink. The beverage is not soft like a pillow. Rather, it is nonalcoholic, unlike a hard drink, which is a distilled alcoholic beverage.

Bathing in and imbibing natural mineral water were ancient practices. Later, Arabic chemists experimented with soft-drink concoctions that included crushed fruit, herbs, or flowers. Dandelion and burdock — a traditional British soft drink — has been around since at least the 13th century.

The modern-day soft drink, however, didn’t develop until the 18th century, when scientists started synthesizing carbonated water — also known as soda water. The “soda” part of the word is derived from the sodium salts within the water. (The salts reduce the liquid’s acidity.) Another term for soda water is seltzer, named for Selters, a German village known for its hot springs.

As the soft-drink industry grew in the United States, so too did the vocabulary associated with it. Soda was often sold in a part of pharmacies called “soda fountains.” And the employees who worked these fountains were called “soda jerks.” This was not meant as an insult. Soda jerks pulled — or jerked — on the machines to draw out the beverage.

Of course, fizzy drinks come in all shapes and sizes — root beer, lemon-lime, orange, grape … No variety, though, is more archetypal than cola. Cola gets its name from kola, a caffeinated nut native to Africa that traditionally has been chewed to boost energy and suppress hunger pangs.

SUMMER IN HERE!!!!!

Hoo Ray!!!  It is here...and all week the wonderful sun is here to bask us in vitamin DDDDDDDDDD!
I do like it warm, but being a midwestern girl from the begining, I don't really care for it smokin HOT.  But my peas and strawberries are loving the heat...the dog, not so much....you just have to move slower, that's all.

I have a couple of more sneek peeks to show you.  I have mainly been posting them om our Sharin Memories blog, but here are a couple of really really cute new things coming from GRAPHIC 45...

And if these are not cool enough...look at these awesome new tags...

HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY!!

Our great legacy is the freedom that we have inherited through the blood and toil of everyday Americans and the liberties that have been handed down to us by our patriot forefathers. May we protect and defend these freedoms so that we may pass them to our children, grandchildren, and all future generations of Americans.

Kids Day Camp!!!

I hope everyone has started to get in the groove of SUMMERTIME!  I know it has been really chilly and wet so far this year here in Washington, but I have faith...faith that the sun will shine...shine for more than 3 days in a row...soon...July is our month here in the Northwest...I hope!

I am doing a Kids Day Camp every Tuesday in July! that's right.   Every Tuesday from 10 am till 12 pm.  I don't really have an age limit, if you think your kid can do a fun project, bring them in!  The cost is $10.00 per day, per project.  Which brings me to the first project....drumroll please..........well I know you will not even believe this, but we will be making a small album out of toilet paper rolls...yes that is right, you heard me correctly the first time, I already ahve a sample up in the store, and it turned out really cute!  Stop by and see it.  We will have a great time creating this small one of a kind album.
